Ruan Lingyu, one of the most famous stars of early Chinese cinema, gives a devastating performance as an unnamed ‘goddess’ – an ironic euphemism for a prostitute – in this profoundly moving but rarely seen classic of world cinema. In a tragic tale of shame and maternal sacrifice, Ruan stars as a mother desperate to provide for her young son and forced to take brutal vengeance on her pimp. It is a profoundly moving drama made all the more poignant by the fact that its star committed suicide at the age of 24, a year after the film’s release.

三十年代的上海，夜晚降临，一个穷苦的美貌女人（阮玲玉）为了养活尚在襁褓之中的儿子，不得不沦为在街头揽客的妓女。一次，为躲避追捕，她误入了流氓（章志直）的居所，身体和挣来的血汗钱均被后者占为己有。几年后，儿子（黎铿）长大，她背着流氓偷偷存下钱，送他入小学。然而，流言蜚语很传入学校，家长们容不下一个妓女之子，她的儿最终遭到开除。正当她决定带着儿子远走他乡时，却发现多年来攒下的积蓄早已被流氓摸走、挥霍一空……

吴永刚（1907年11月1日－1982年12月18日），出生于上海，18岁开始当电影美工练习生。1931年，他进入联华影业公司任美工师，后在田汉的支持下，拍摄了处女作《神女》，从此奠定了其作为导演的地位。他的一生共留下了30多部电影作品，其中不少为自编自导之作，最后一部是与吴贻弓联合执导的《巴山夜雨》（1980），获第一届金鸡奖的最佳故事片。
