In Depth With: TAN Chui Mui, with a screening of Love Conquers All

Following the industry screening of Love Conquers All, TAN Chui Mui will share the inspirations behind the film, the challenges in making her first feature film, and the experiences of screening it at different film festivals. She will also discuss her involvement in supporting young and emerging filmmakers in Malaysia with the Next New Wave, an initiative she founded in 2015 that provided emerging filmmakers a platform to learn directly from renowned filmmakers in the region.

TAN Chui Mui

TAN Chui Mui was born in Kuantan, Malaysia. At the age of 5, TAN Chui Mui made a small wooden stool. At 8, she drove a pickup truck onto a column. At 9, she printed a children’s magazine. At 12, she finished reading an Encyclopedia. At 17, she had a column in a student weekly paper. At 21, she received a computer animation degree. At 27, she made her first film. At 38, she gave birth to a child. At 41, she decided to learn martial arts.

Her first feature film Love Conquers All (2006) won the New Currents Award and FIPRESCI Award at Busan, and the Tiger Award at IFFR. Her short film Everyday Everyday (2009) won the top prize at Clermont-Ferrand. In 2015, she initiated Next New Wave, providing young film talents in Malaysia with a platform to learn directly from renowned filmmakers in the region. In 2017, she started SeaShorts, a film festival showcasing Southeast Asian short films. Her recent film Barbarian Invasion (2021) won the Jury Grand Prix of Golden Goblet Awards at Shanghai.

Love Conquers All

Ping (Coral Ong Li Whei) has come from Penang in the north to Kuala Lumpur to work with her aunt. There she meets John, a young man who keeps trying to approach her. Ping feels increasingly attracted to John, and although she has a boyfriend in Penang, she is drawn more and more into John’s world. Ping loses herself in her love and does all she can to keep John.

Love Conquers All is the debut feature of TAN Chui Mui. Winner of the New Currents Award and FIPRESCI Award at Busan International Film Festival (2006) and the Tiger award at Rotterdam International Film Festival (2007).

Yixun ZHANG

ZHANG Yixun is an arts administrator with a Master of Arts in Film Preservation and Collections Management from Toronto Metropolitan University. They have worked at Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT), and the Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Centre (CFMDC). Yixun is also actively involved in film festivals, serving as a guest programmer for the8fest Small-Gauge Film Festival in 2022, and as an industry coordinator for the Mulan International Film Festival.
