Newspaper Columnist Chow (Tony LEUNG) writes about a train departing for 2046—a destination for those seeking to recapture lost memories, from which no one ever wants to return. In 1966, he returns to Hong Kong from Singapore and checks into Room 2047. There, he drifts through a series of fleeting, intimate encounters with the women who pass through the neighboring Room 2046: the tragedy of Lulu (Carina LAU), the quiet devotion of Jing-wen (Faye WONG), the unreciprocated love of Bai Ling (ZHANG Ziyi). Yet he remains suspended in detachment—always observing, rarely surrendering. His most beloved, Su Li-zhen (GONG Li), who helps him win back his losses at the casino, refuses to return to Hong Kong with him. He imagines a future where nothing ever changes, but cannot bring himself to write its ending.
