DUAN Xiaolou (ZHANG Fengyi) knows the stage is only a stage, but CHENG Dieyi (Leslie CHEUNG) lives as if he truly were Yu Ji—his love woven into every breath. From childhood companions to opera partners, their bond is tested when Juxian (GONG Li) enters their lives. On and off the stage, desire and delusion, devotion and betrayal, echo through time. A love too entangled with roles, played again and again in the tides of history.
Director
CHEN Kaige is a leading figure of the fifth generation of Chinese cinema. He made his directorial debut with Yellow Earth (1984) and achieved an international success with Farewell My Concubine (1993), which earned him the Palme d’Or at Cannes.
